Insurance for a Raja Ampat Liveaboard

A dive-branded policy may still miss your route or activity. Read the definitions and written coverage for the trip you booked.

Travel insurance and dive insurance aren't synonyms.

One policy may focus on cancellation and baggage. Another may respond to a diving incident but offer little for a missed connection. Evacuation assistance may depend on medical necessity, approved providers, geography and the policy's own process. Equipment can sit under another limit again.

We won't name an insurer or tell you a product is suitable. We will tell you which trip facts to take to a policy provider or qualified adviser.

Our market research found one operator requiring dive insurance and another advertising an included evacuation policy. Neither fact creates an industry-wide rule. Our own requirement is stated in the booking conditions for the departure you choose, because it is a condition of that booking rather than a general rule we can assert for the whole market.

Begin with the operator's requirement

Ask whether cover is mandatory for the exact departure and what evidence must be supplied. "Insurance recommended" and "proof required before diving" are different terms.

If the booking conditions specify dive, medical or evacuation cover, match the policy wording to those categories. Do not substitute a credit-card benefit or an assistance membership without checking that it satisfies the written requirement.

Record policy and emergency contact details where the operator requests them. Keep an offline copy. A document stored only in an email account is less useful when connectivity fails.

Give the insurer the real trip

Describe the destination, dates, liveaboard format, planned scuba activity, certification, expected depth within training, any additional activities and the full non-refundable trip value. State that the boat operates in remote parts of Raja Ampat and boards in Sorong.

If the itinerary includes a private charter, say so. If you carry expensive camera equipment, list it. If the policy question depends on a named vessel, wait until the assignment is confirmed and update the record.

Our Misool and Dampier full-park trip is an eleven-night remote itinerary with repeated diving. That is more precise than telling an insurer you are taking a holiday in Indonesia.

Four cover questions, not one label

First, medical treatment. Does the policy cover illness and injury arising from the activities you plan, within the policy definitions and exclusions?

Second, evacuation. What circumstances trigger it, who authorises it and where does transport end? Do not infer that the word evacuation means any transfer the guest requests.

Third, travel disruption. What happens after cancellation, delay, missed departure or an interruption once the trip starts? Which causes and expenses are included?

Fourth, equipment. Are owned and rented dive gear, cameras and baggage covered, at what individual-item limits and under what handling conditions?

A policy can answer one strongly and another poorly. Read all four.

Diving depth and certification clauses

Some policy wording ties cover to certification, training limits, supervision or stated maximum depths. We don't interpret those clauses for you. Ask the provider to confirm how they apply to your certification and planned diving.

Do not plan to exceed training or operator limits because a policy appears broad. Insurance doesn't make a dive suitable. Our Raja Ampat certification guide treats route fit as an operating decision before it becomes an insurance question.

If you are completing training during the trip, disclose it. Training dives and certified recreational dives may be described differently in policy documents.

Pre-existing conditions and disclosure

Answer health questions accurately and obtain appropriate medical advice when needed. We cannot decide whether a condition is covered or whether a diver is medically fit.

If a policy uses a screening, waiver or declaration, complete it before the cancellation deadlines create pressure. A medical issue discovered at boarding is harder to solve than one raised during planning.

Carry necessary medication in accordance with travel rules and keep essential doses accessible during transfers. That is logistics, not a promise that the boat can replace them.

Evacuation is a process

Remote operations do not have a single guaranteed evacuation time. Location, conditions, available transport, medical assessment and coordination all affect what happens. We won't publish a number the research cannot support.

Ask the policy or assistance provider which contact starts the process and whether prior authorisation is required where practicable. Ask the operator for its emergency communication method and incident procedure. Those are separate systems that need to meet.

Save contacts offline and give a copy to a travelling companion. The crew needs accurate information, but it cannot rewrite policy terms during an incident.

Cancellation and missed boarding

A liveaboard departure cannot always wait for a delayed guest. Check what the booking terms say about arrival, and ask the insurer how missed connections and missed embarkation are treated.

Arriving in Sorong before the boarding day can reduce operational risk, but it doesn't guarantee a claim outcome. Keep tickets, receipts and written notices if disruption occurs, following the policy's instructions.

For a private booking, the insured amount may include a substantial whole-boat commitment. Our guide to booking a Raja Ampat charter makes the payment schedule and cancellation terms part of the file you take to an adviser.

Equipment and cameras

Standard baggage limits may be far below the value of a camera housing or full dive kit. Check single-item limits, depreciation, unattended-property definitions, baggage-delay benefits and whether rented equipment creates a liability not covered by your own property section.

Document serial numbers and condition before travel if required. Keep essential regulators, computer, mask and medication in cabin baggage only where airline rules allow.

Our liveaboard gear and nitrox checklist helps separate items you own from those reserved aboard. Give the insurer the same accurate list.

What included assistance means

If a boat says an evacuation benefit or assistance membership is included, request the actual scope and terms. It may be valuable. It may also sit alongside, not replace, personal medical and travel cover.

Do not describe an included benefit as comprehensive insurance unless the documentation does. Confirm who is covered, for which dates and activities, and how it is activated.

Documents to carry

Keep the policy schedule, wording, assistance contact, operator booking confirmation, medical information requested by the provider and proof of significant equipment. Store copies offline and separately from the originals.

Give an emergency contact at home the itinerary and policy details. Tell them who the operator is and when the boat is due back, without expecting them to manage routine changes.

The decision boundary

We provide itinerary facts, booking terms and our confirmed insurance requirement. The insurer explains its product. A qualified adviser can compare needs. The traveller makes accurate disclosures and stays within training and the dive plan.

If any party answers for another, stop and get the answer from the source that owns it.

Common questions

Is ordinary travel insurance enough?
Not automatically. Check whether the policy covers the booked diving, liveaboard travel, destination, evacuation circumstances, trip value and relevant pre-existing conditions.
Does dive insurance cover cancelled flights?
Do not assume it. Diving assistance, medical, travel-disruption and equipment benefits may sit in different policies or sections. Read the actual wording.
Can you recommend an insurer?
No. Needs differ by residence, medical history, activity and trip value. We provide trip facts so you can obtain appropriate independent advice.
