The phrase camera room can describe anything from a dry dedicated workspace to one shared table beside the dive deck.
Either can work. What matters is whether the assigned boat has enough dry preparation space, separate rinse handling, safe charging and a tender process for the number of photographers aboard.
Our market review found operators using camera facilities as a sales point without explaining the workflow. Ask for the workflow. A large table is little help if wet housings cross the charging area or every guest needs the same two outlets.
Describe the system you bring
Tell the operator whether you carry a compact camera, small housing, large housing with strobes, video lights or multiple bodies. Give an approximate packed and assembled size.
That information affects storage, table allocation and tender handoff. It also lets the operator say honestly when a small vessel cannot support several large systems at once.
Do not assume an empty-looking camera table in a photograph remains empty on a full departure.
Dry preparation and wet handling
Keep the preparation zone dry. Assemble housings with clean hands, inspect seals in good light and avoid opening a housing beside wet suits or rinse tanks.
Once a housing enters the water, it belongs in the wet workflow until dried and checked. Follow the boat's rinse sequence. Do not leave a camera soaking in a communal tank or place general equipment into a camera-only tank.
Ask whether towels, air blowers or tools are provided. Use only equipment approved by the crew and manufacturer. Improvised high-pressure air can move water or contamination into places you do not want it.

Charging is an operating rule
Confirm outlet type, voltage, available capacity and charging hours on the assigned vessel. Bring correct chargers and one sensible adapter. Avoid stacked extensions.
Label batteries and create a physical system for charged and depleted units. Keep lithium batteries within airline rules during travel and follow the boat's rules aboard.
Do not charge on a wet camera table. Do not block ventilation around chargers. If the crew requires charging to stop during sleep or passages, plan enough batteries to comply.
Connectivity is irrelevant to image security. Bring enough cards and a local backup plan rather than expecting cloud uploads.
Tender handoffs decide how calm the entry feels
Large rigs should normally move according to the guide's brief, often handed down after the diver is stable or passed up before boarding. The exact procedure belongs to the boat and conditions.
Agree on who passes and receives the camera. Use handles and attachment points designed for the load. Do not ask crew to lift an unfamiliar rig by a strobe arm.
Keep clips controlled so they do not snag. A current-sensitive entry is not the time to untangle a loose lanyard.
If negative entries are planned, tell the guide whether the system changes your descent speed or equalisation. The shot doesn't outrank staying with the group.
Current chooses the photograph
Raja Ampat current can create fish density and make a stationary composition difficult. A photographer who fights for one angle can separate from the guide or damage the reef.
Listen for entry point, direction, shelter, pickup plan and whether stopping is realistic. Choose a setup you can manage while maintaining buoyancy and situational awareness.

Sometimes the right decision is to leave the camera aboard for the first dive at a demanding site. Learn the shape, then carry it if a later entry and conditions allow.
Wide and macro decisions
Broad reef structure, schooling fish and large animals often suggest a wide setup. Jetties, sheltered bays and small subjects may reward macro work. That is a route-level pattern, not a guarantee of any animal.
Ask the guide the evening before what the next sites are like and how certain the plan is. Prepare one system cleanly rather than changing in a rush after the tender call.
On a long trip, choose a few deliberate change points. Repeatedly opening a housing in humid boat conditions adds work and opportunities for error.

Buoyancy before the viewfinder
A photographer still needs stable buoyancy, gas awareness and group position. The camera adds task load and can narrow attention.
Do not rest on living coral for a shot. Do not move animals or natural objects into a composition. The marine park authority prohibits coral damage and collection.
If a subject moves away, let it. Chasing can disrupt wildlife and separate you from the plan. A missed frame costs less than a lost group.
Shared space etiquette
Keep your allocated section compact. Return tools to a marked pouch. Do not move another guest's housing or unplug a charger without permission.
Dry cameras before bringing them into indoor spaces. Keep O-rings and small parts from blowing across deck during passages.
Photographers often wake early and work late. Use lights and conversation without turning the camera area into a cabin wall for nearby guests.
Backups and failures
Carry enough storage for the whole trip and keep at least one backup separate from the primary copy. A laptop may help, but it adds charging, moisture and baggage risk.
If a housing shows water, end the dive according to safe procedure. Do not sacrifice ascent control to inspect electronics. Once aboard, remove power only when it is safe and appropriate for the device.
The boat may help with a workspace. It cannot stock a replacement for every proprietary part.
The route matters more than the facility label

A camera-focused guest should compare site time, group size, guide deployment and tender setup alongside the camera table. A perfect charging bench cannot repair a route that rushes every entry.
Ask these questions
How much dry table space exists? Is rinse separate? Where do housings stay between dives? What outlets and charging rules apply? How are cameras handed into tenders? How many large systems are expected? Can guides split by photographic pace without compromising safety?
Get the decisive answers for the assigned vessel in writing.
Bring a camera system you can operate without asking the reef or the group to wait for it.
