Waigeo is both a large island and the planning label we use for the far-north cruise area, including Wayag. That label needs explanation because a route can mention northern Raja Ampat without actually reaching Wayag.
The key decision is distance. Wayag appears in published north-loop products, not as an automatic add-on to every cruise. Aljui Bay sits on Waigeo's northwest side and offers a different diving shape from exposed coral ridges. Eagle Rock anchors the far-north dive selection, though its evidence is thinner than the best-known Dampier sites.
Choose this area for the north itself. Do not add it to a short Misool route and expect both ends to retain time.
Wayag is a route commitment
Our operator review found Wayag in seven-to-ten-night north products and on longer itineraries that add it deliberately. A seven-night leisure route can focus on Wayag and Piaynemo. A nine-night dive route can include meaningful Dampier and Fam diving around the northern movement.
Neither is a full-park route. Misool sits in the opposite direction and needs its own nights.

Dive route and leisure route
A dive liveaboard needs sites, tank cycles and safe final timing around the long north movement. A leisure cruise can spend more daylight on viewpoints, snorkelling, paddling and time ashore.
The nine-night Wayag dive liveaboard is for guests who want a working dive programme and the far-north route. The shorter leisure product is for guests whose main activities happen above or near the surface.
Mixed groups should not select by map alone. Confirm whether separate tenders and crew let diving and leisure activities operate without one waiting for the other.
Eagle Rock
Eagle Rock is selected for launch with a caveat. Operator descriptions support a far-north reef site with current and schooling or large-animal potential, but the source base is thin. One striking superlative in the market cannot carry our page.
For a photographer, the site briefing should determine lens and entry plan. Current can make a fixed composition or long stop unrealistic.
Aljui Bay
Aljui Bay is the counterpoint to the usual Raja Ampat reef narrative. The research describes black-sand, jetty and macro-oriented diving from operator sources, including a published night-dive placement. Numbers are thin, which is why the page is selected for editorial value rather than a confident specification strip.
A pearl farm operates in the area, but our research could not verify visitor access or terms. We do not describe a farm visit as part of the itinerary.
What the north gives the dive sequence
Far-north routes create contrast. Dampier and Fam can provide current-led reefs and jetties before the boat moves north. Eagle Rock continues the exposed reef theme. Aljui Bay can shift attention toward small subjects and a sheltered bay environment.
That variety only works when the itinerary budgets time for it. A route that names all locations but spends every night moving may leave little usable site choice.
Ask which days are full dive days, which are repositioning days and where the Wayag surface activities sit. Then compare the expected dive total, not a daily ceiling.
Season truth
The research supports published fleet windows and BMKG warning products for Raja Ampat waters. It does not close a primary month-by-month weather table for the Waigeo and Wayag route.
We therefore do not say one named month guarantees access or ideal seas. Check real departures and ask what alternative route operates if the far-north leg is not safe.
Captain judgement and current warnings override the brochure. A good route has valuable alternatives without pretending Wayag is guaranteed regardless of conditions.
Site evidence is limited
No scientific or marine-park authority source located in the research publishes per-site depth and current for Eagle Rock or Aljui Bay. Operator descriptions are the working tier.
That does not make them useless. It means the page says who supports the number, whether another source corroborates it and where the range applies.
Coordinates are omitted unless a reputable source or our own crew record supplies them. Exact run times are also crew facts, not search-summary facts.
Wayag above water
This site is not the parent company's place guide, so we avoid duplicating landscape description and visitor instructions. For a cruise buyer, the relevant questions are whether the route reaches Wayag, how many nights it uses, what activities are planned and what the alternative is.
Ask about tender support, footwear, physical demands and the operator's access procedure. Do not assume every guest can or must join a viewpoint visit.
Leisure guests should also ask how long surface activities last. A dive-led itinerary may offer a shorter block than a leisure cruise.
Villages and birds
Waigeo routes can include village and bird-of-paradise activities when arranged properly. The marine park authority lists birds of paradise as protected.
Visits need host and local-guide arrangements. We do not promise a sighting, invent a schedule or treat community life as a performance.
The ten-night leisure route uses extra time for these activities rather than claiming a dive programme it does not provide.
Environmental operation
Anchoring is generally prohibited in the marine protected waters, and moorings must be used where available. The operator manages the vessel permit and mooring decisions.
Guests must not collect natural objects, feed fish, damage coral or dispose of waste improperly. Motorised water sports such as jet-skis are listed as prohibited inside the park.
These rules apply even when the location feels remote from enforcement.
Who should choose Waigeo and Wayag
Choose the far north if Wayag is a fixed priority, if a longer loop appeals more than Misool, or if the contrast of exposed reefs and Aljui macro diving matters.
Choose Fam and Piaynemo if you want a shorter northern circuit. Choose Dampier for compact current-led diving. Choose Misool for the south.
The Waigeo route's value is reach. Its cost is time, and the itinerary should show every part of that trade.
