Manta Sandy

Manta Sandy is a shallow cleaning-station site near the southern side of Gam and the Arborek area. The dive is built around waiting, not pursuing.

Reef mantas may approach rocks where cleaner fish work. Divers take the position given in the briefing and let animals control the distance. Chasing, blocking or rising into a manta's path defeats the site and can end the encounter for everyone.

Two operator sources support the cleaning-station description and broad suitability for beginners, experienced divers and snorkellers. They differ slightly on depth and current. One gives two to eighteen metres with none-to-mild current; another describes about five metres average, twenty metres maximum and usually moderate current. The specification keeps the full supported range and uses moderate as the cautious summary.

How the dive works

The tender drops the group according to current and site procedure. Divers descend, approach the designated observation area and settle without contacting coral or stirring the bottom.

This is not a wide-ranging reef tour when mantas attend. Patience creates the dive. Maintain buoyancy, keep the group line clear and avoid filling the water above the cleaning station.

The diver-limit claim

One operator states that twenty divers are allowed per day. Our primary-source audit found that the marine park authority's location-specific codes of conduct were still being finalised. It did not find the legal instrument behind that number.

The limit may be a local arrangement or operator practice, but we do not present it as park law. Follow the guide and site manager's current procedure on the day.

Who this site suits

The shallow profile and published all-level guidance make Manta Sandy one of the strongest mixed-experience sites in the research. A new diver still needs stable buoyancy and must be able to wait without kneeling on the reef.

Snorkellers may see the same cleaning-station activity from above when conditions and tender support allow. That makes the site unusually valuable for a diver and non-diver travelling together.

Sightings and season

Both sources publish October to April and list potentially large manta numbers. Identical marketing language may share one origin, so we do not turn a maximum sighting count into an expectation.

A published season is also not a daily promise. Current, visibility and manta attendance change. If the animals are absent, the crew has not failed to deliver a guaranteed event.

Manta Sandy or Manta Ridge

Manta Ridge is the more demanding current-led option and is consistently described for advanced divers. Manta Sandy is the broader-access cleaning station.

A mixed-experience couple should not treat the two names as interchangeable. The guide may select one based on conditions and group ability.

Conduct

The marine park authority protects manta rays but publishes no official interaction distance on the pages reviewed. We will not invent a metre rule. Follow the briefing, keep the observation line, do not touch or feed wildlife and let every animal leave freely.

That behaviour is more important than the photograph.
